Temporal dimensions of knowledge exchanges in horizontal knowledge networks

Abstract: Purpose This study aims to examine reciprocal exchanges in knowledge networks using temporal differentiation of knowledge exchanges. To date, research on horizontal knowledge networks rather overlooks the temporal perspective, which could explain the dynamics of exchange in those networks. Design/methodology/approach The paper reports on a study of four horizontal knowledge networks in the UK over a period of 18 months. Findings The findings integrate three temporal dimensions of timescale, timeliness and … Show more

“…Firstly, the research team analysed the data separately; then, researchers met and reviewed each other's suggestions, discussed, defined, and justified their codes, and agreed on initial themes for application to the full dataset. This was to ensure the interviewees' voices are maintained across the data analysis processes (Abualqumboz, et al, 2021). Secondly, credibility was also addressed during the data analysis phase by operationalizing an external peer review of themes by one expert academic in the field to address discrepancies in their organization, cross alignment, and track-ability (Creswell and Miller, 2000).…”

“…However, the lived experiences are transformed and reinterpreted before reintegrating and repeated in the actors' narrations (Ngoc Su et al, 2021). In this way, organizational memory is continuously being developed, expanded and reified through time (Abualqumboz et al, 2020). Therefore, one must look at the stories repeated and told over time to find the sedimentation of past events inscribed in the management principles and the culture underpinning how a company operates (Gherardi, 2009).…”

“…For instance, Brouder (2012) showed that rather than simply creating a forum and having everyone join it, these networks co-evolve gradually over time with the formation of loosely connected project-based teams. Indeed, the literature on knowledge networks has shown that time is a significant influencer of knowledge exchange (Abualqumboz et al , 2020).…”
