“…However, they can also be attributed to degradation in environmental quality, such as pollution and other disturbances (Lailson-Brito et al, 2002;. The Fundão dam disaster impacted the FMA Ia region (Mayorga et al, 2020;Marcondes et al, 2020;Manhães et al, 2022). This incident is being monitored to understand the environmental impact over this population.…”

“…Franciscana dolphins are classified as Vulnerable by the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (Zerbini et al, 2017) and Critically Endangered according to the Red Book of Brazilian Fauna Threatened with Extinction (ICMBio, 2018). In general, they inhabit turbid waters shallower than 30 m. Due to the coastal characteristics of their distribution, they are subject to a series of disturbances and anthropogenic threats, especially incidental catch in fishing nets (Secchi et al, 2003;Danilewicz et al, 2009;Prado et al, 2013) and contamination by environmental degradation and chemical pollution (Lailson-Brito et al, 2002;Manhães et al, 2022). Secchi et al (2003) proposed four "Franciscana Management Areas" (FMAs) which aim is to guide conservation efforts on a regional basis: two of these areas are located in southeastern and southern Brazil (FMA I and II), one in southern Brazil and Uruguay (FMA III) and one in Argentina (FMA IV).…”

“…This decline in concentration could be related to environmental alterations in the Abrolhos Bank due to diseases and changes in the community associated with climate change, and/or the decrease in biodiversity after the dam collapse. Manhães et al (2022) showed differences in trace element concentrations in franciscanas from FMA Ia. Hg, Mn and Zn concentrations increased after the collapse of the mining dam and reached the coast of Espírito Santo state.…”

“…Among the most toxic anthropogenic pollutants are organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and trace metals that are environmentally persistent, become bioaccumulated and biomagnified due to their low water solubility and slow chemical decomposition 6 . The OCPs and trace metal residues are transported to the marine ecosystems by environmental factors such as effluents, wind, and rain, becoming bioavailable from marine sediments or water columns for the marine organisms 7 , 8 .…”
