Temporalis Muscle Width as a Measure of Sarcopenia Independently Predicts Overall Survival in Patients with Newly Diagnosed Glioblastoma

Abstract: patients (PPV: 0.44). PPV was 0.89 and 0.80 for dose at F10 and F15 respectively using a DNTCP cutoff for the allocation of ART of 5%. Using other DNTCP cutoffs did not significantly improve PPV. With this cutoff the negative predictive value was 0.90, 0.94 and 0.93 for clinical judgement, F10 and F15. Conclusion: Clinical judgement poorly identifies patients who have a >5% DNTCP between planned and delivered dose. To identify them more accurately, NTCP models based on the dose differences between planned and … Show more

“…Since this report, there have been several papers on the temporalis muscle and prognosis, especially in brain tumors. There are several reports on overall survival and temporal muscle in glioblastoma [ 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 ], metastatic brain tumor [ 31 , 46 , 47 ], and primary central nervous system lymphoma [ 37 , 48 ]. As in reports on TMT and stroke, all of these reports used temporal muscle to indicate nutritional status and skeletal muscle mass volume.…”

“…Furtner[ 9 - 11 , 41 ] did not use image analysis and engineering software, but used MRI and measured TMT perpendicular to the long axis of the temporal muscle at the level of the orbital roof. Hsieh[ 15 ] measured the TM width using an average of the four slices of head CT images. Here, we used CT to measure TMT and TMA.…”

“…Therefore, we focused on the temporal muscle thickness (TMT), and temporal muscle area (TMA) on the head CT, because TMT and TMA are substituted as useful measures of the total body skeletal muscle mass. [ 13 , 26 , 34 ] TMT and TMA are recently featured and reported as clinically useful parameters; they are indicators of nutrition,[ 13 ] prognosis of glioblastoma,[ 11 , 15 ] and brain metastasis. [ 9 , 10 ] They are also predictors of sarcopenia in neurological patients[ 41 ] or major complications following surgery for nonsyndromic craniosynostosis.…”

“…Recently, TMT is substituted as a useful and safe measure of the total body skeletal muscle mass. [ 13 , 25 , 33 ] TMT is also featured and reported as clinically useful parameters; they are indicators of nutrition,[ 13 ] prognosis of glioblastoma,[ 1 , 12 , 15 , 26 , 30 , 41 ] and newly diagnosed brain metastasis. [ 10 , 11 ] TMT is a predictor of sarcopenia in neurological patients.…”
