Terahertz and Infrared Surface Wave Beams and Pulses on Gyrotropic, Nonlinear and Metamaterial Interfaces

Abstract: This work is devoted to theoretical study of surface plasmon polariton propagation on metal or metamaterial -dielectric interfaces where media can possess optical or magnetooptical activity or cubic nonlinearity. On the interface of gyrotropic media surface wave changes its polarization and profile as well as in case of interface of media with cubic nonlinearity. Surface wave propagation constant can be modified by magnetization leading to magnetooptical intensity effect. The properties of plasmons in gratings… Show more

“…Only the former case is considered further, since the latter case can be analyzed in the same way. In our previous work [22] the analysis of the dispersion equation (9) was performed within the linear in the gyration coefficient approximation since usually optical activity of gyrotropic media is rather weak…”

“…Recently, Fano interferences have been applied successfully to explain a large number of phenomena in various systems. These phenomena include the quantum transport in quantum dots, wires and tunnel junctions , the energy‐dependent line profile of absorption in molecular systems , bilayer graphene nanostructures and the asymmetric distribution of the density of states in Anderson impurity systems as well as several optical systems, such as strong coupling between Mie and Bragg scattering in photonic crystals and terahertz metamaterials .…”

“…Slight variations of the dielectric permittivity result in a significant shift of the SPP resonance which is widely used nowadays for sensing applications [7][8][9][10] and all-optical light control [11][12][13][14][15][16][17] . The impact of magnetooptical gyrotropy on the SPP properties is promising for ultrafast modulation of the laser radiation [18][19][20][21][22] , while the presense of optical activity 23,24 performs the modification of the SPP polarization. It was shown that such issues of magnetoelectric coupling as chirality 25 and the axion effect in topological insulators 26 can be revealed in plasmonic structures via observation of the changes in the SPP excitation conditions or polarization mediated by them.…”

“…There is a slight difference between the surface plasmon frequencies of the two modes according to Eqs. (23),(24) and(25). For example, for the gold/Cr 2 O 3 interface the surface plasmon frequency corresponds to λ sp e = 506 nm and λ sp o = 503.5 nm while for the silver/Cr 2 O 3 interface λ sp e = 390 nm and λ sp o = 387 nm.…”
