Terahertz sensing method for protein detection using a thin metallic mesh

Abstract: A label-free biological sensor, which is based on the resonant transmission phenomenon of a thin metallic mesh, is proposed in the terahertz wave region. By using this sensor, we demonstrate the highly sensitive detection of small amounts of protein horseradish peroxidase. For quantitative investigation of the sensitivity of our sensor, horseradish peroxidase was printed on the metallic mesh surface by using a commercial available printer. A distinct shift of the transmission dip frequency is observed for 500p… Show more

“…8,9 The dip was the result of fano-like interference effect between the terahertz light transmitted directly and obliquely through MMD. 16,17 The results suggested our simulation model with a small outshoot was valid for the fano-like interference and applicable for the MMD biosensing.…”

“…It was shown by Miyamaru et al 8 and Yoshida et al 9,10 that the transmittance property of an MMD changes with substance adsorption. They investigated the optical property change in view of dielectric property change.…”

“…Based on this phenomenon, MMD sensors, which detect the quantity of substance from the shift in the spectrum, have been developed. [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] Metal species for manufacturing are not limited, because MMDs made from various metals have extraordinary transmittance. MMDs offer high-throughput, compared with QCM and SPR, and can be used in screening and initial diagnosis.…”

“…The air holes can be fabricated by standard mechanical micro-drilling techniques, as in. 28 The mechanical method allows the precise and deep perforation of the slab reducing therefore out of plane leakage and providing extremely narrow defect resonances in the THz range for a variety of applications such as THz bio-sensing, 29 for example.…”
