Teratogenic effects of aldrin, dieldrin, and endrin in hamsters and mice

Abstract: Single oral doses of aldrin, dieldrin, and endrin, 1/2 LD50 incorn oil, administered to pregnant golden hamsters on day 7, 8, or 9 of gestationcaused a high incidence of fetal death, congenital anomalies, and growthretardation. The most frequent defects were cleft palate, open eye, andwebbed foot, often occurring in combination. Pregnant CD1 mice given equivalent oral doses of each pesticide on day 9 of gestation showed similar anomalieswithout concurrent increase in fetal mortality or growth impairment.

“…In addition, two other studies evaluated single day exposures. A single exposure to endrin on GD 9 (Ottolenghi et al 1974) or a single exposure to gamma radiation on GD 12 (Saad et al 1991) each significantly induced development of cleft palate (Figure 2). …”

“…In hamsters, a single oral dose (2.5 or 5 mg/ kg) on day 7,8, or 9 p.c. caused teratogenic effects (Ottolenghi et al, 1974;Chernoff et al, 1979). Oral treatment (0.75 to 3.5 mg/ kg/ day) from the 5th to 14th day p.c.…”

“…A single oral dose at 15 mg/kg on day 7, 8, or 9 p.c. was teratogenic but not embryotoxic, while 30 mg/ kg/ day was both embryotoxic and teratogenic (Ottolenghi et al, 1974). Chernoff et al (1975) treated pregnant mice and rats from the 7th to the 16th day p.c.…”
