Terminalia catappa leaf solution: an eco-friendly approach to managing color, algae, and microbial activity in aquaculture systems

Abstract

The sustainable advancement of aquaculture is critically tied to water quality in farming ponds, given its profound influence on the quality, productivity, and yield of aquaculture products. Although traditional water treatment methods are commonly used, there’s an emerging trend towards exploring economical, natural solutions. This study delves into the potential of Terminalia catappa leaf solution as an innovative means for improving water quality in tilapia farming ponds. Our methodology focused on assessing various leaf extract concentrations, specifically from 0.025% to 0.25%, to determine its efficacy in controlling algae growth. Daily evaluations were conducted, emphasizing key water quality indicators such as TKN, P, COD, TSS, color, and turbidity. The findings underscored the extract’s capability in managing algae proliferation. Importantly, a dosage of 0.2 ml of extract per liter of water emerged as the most potent concentration, effectively maintaining desired water quality over a 10-day span.
