Geological heritage or geoheritage is of at least equal significance to – and sometimes also interwoven with – cultural heritage. Hence, it holds the potential of scientific, educational, cultural, aesthetic, and touristic value. Nevertheless, geoheritage has not attracted the same level of attention as cultural heritage to date, especially regarding its sustainable management and suitable conservation strategies. Yet actions and measures are mandatory to preserve and highlight geological heritage and to reduce threats that may cause its deterioration or even extinction. To this end, geospatial science and technology provide the means for documenting and dealing with geological heritage throughout the individual steps of the geoheritage management process. In this study, we present a holistic approach to geoheritage management at the national level for Greece, based on the implementation of a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) database that also enables the coupling of geoheritage with a plethora of readily available geospatial information from remote sensing and other sources. The results demonstrate that an appropriate, geospatial record of geological heritage can have a crucial contribution to geoheritage management from its identification, to its monitoring, protection, and exploitation for educational, scientific, recreational, and other purposes.

Sant’Angelo in Criptis (Santeramo in Puglia, South Italy) is a karst cave located in the Alta Murgia National Park (aspiring geopark), presently degraded, but with signs of intense past visiting activity for worship, as testified by the beautiful wall paintings and the large number of inscriptions and engravings on the cave walls. With the aim to permit the desirable restoration and the following fruition of this ancient geo-cultural heritage, a multidisciplinary investigation of the cave was carried out in this study. The 3D cave model permitted a detailed map of the area and highlighted that the cave vault, although very regular, somewhere presents chimneys that develop upwards, indicating areas where the rock thickness is now very small. The stability analysis indicates that presently, the cave does not show remarkable signs of instability, but block failures, toppling and roof collapse are possible. Archaeometry investigations confirmed the past importance of this holy site, as testified by the overlapping in the paintings of three different pictorial cycles and the use of precious pigments, thus confirming the necessity of preservation through a conservation management strategy for a full future fruition of the cave.

This study concerns the design of a geocultural site in Huta Różaniecka. It is one of 166 sites prepared for the Kamienny Las na Roztoczu (Roztocze Stone Forest) Geopark project. The site is distinguished, on the one hand, by its interesting geology and geomorphology (exposures of Miocene sea shore with numerous fossils) and, on the other hand, by its quarries, stonemasonry traditions, and buildings (ruins of the Greek Catholic church). The aim of this paper is to present a model for building specialized documentation using a wide range of source materials, methods (field inventory, queries, interviews, high-precision Light Detection and Ranging-LiDAR measurements), tools (Leica ScanStation C10 laser scanner), and techniques (photography, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-UAV, Terrestrial Laser Scanning-TLS). The applied research procedure model led to the construction of specialized documentation relating to the spatial dimension, natural features, and cultural context of the site. Taking into account the collected data, it should be concluded that the projected geocultural site at Huta Różaniecka, irrespective of the creation of a geopark, has great potential to build a tourist product that is attractive to a wide range of visitors.
