Terrestrial Wireless Networks and Satellite Systems Convergence

Abstract: Several solutions tackling hybrid systems of wireless access networks including WLAN (Wifi: Wireless Fidelity) and 2nd and 3rd generations of Mobile Networks (GSM/GPRS-UMTS) have already been deployed. These first solutions based on the concept of Generic Access Networks (formerly known as UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access)) are mainly ad-hoc solutions which have to be instantiated for each kind of access networks. The IEEE 802.21 group proposed a more generic solution for this integration covering the 4th generat… Show more

“…One major question is certainly the reason to use MIH in satellite context. Indeed, the needs of vertical handover schemes [3] have been shown in several architectures based on the 802.21 standard [4,5,6].…”

“…Open source implementations and simulation models are now available for most wireless technologies. MIH solutions have also been proposed for DVB and HSTN systems . Qureshi and Dadej , in particular, present the challenges related to the support of MIH in satellite interfaces, such as the mapping of the MIH primitives to the S‐RAN.…”

“…In [1], authors proposed an architecture for the integration between WiMAX and satellite networks (WiMAX/DVB-RCS). The defined architecture takes into account the MIH (Media Independent Handover) reference model proposed by IEEE 802.21 as integration between a satellite system and terrestrial networks.…”
