Test-retest reliability of functional connectivity networks during naturalistic fMRI paradigms

Abstract: Functional connectivity analysis has become a powerful tool for probing the human brain function and its breakdown in neuropsychiatry disorders. “…Interestingly, recent reports suggest that watching a movie during the acquisition of a resting state fMRI scan hardly alters the observable connectivity pattern which makes acquiring such data in children easier. However, this approach is still not in widespread use in the presurgical setting as (1) the direct correspondence between an actually executed task with an observable activation is most important, (2) the test retest reliability is still considered too low for this purpose, and (3) relevant differences in the results from both approaches still exist and need to be better understood . Overall, the use of an active task in a robust block design implementation therefore currently seems preferable in the routine presurgical pediatric setting.…”
