Testicular calcification and microlithiasis: association with primary intra-testicular malignancy in 3,477 patients

Abstract: The prevalence of all forms of scrotal and testicular calcification and their association with testicular tumour in a symptomatic paediatric and adult population was investigated. A retrospective study of all testicular ultrasound examinations performed at a single centre over a 5-year period was undertaken. All studies were performed by experienced operators, recorded in a standard method, using high-frequency linear array transducers (> or =10 MHz). All available images (95.2%) were reviewed by experienced o… Show more

“…In healthy men, this prevalence was found to be between 2.4 and 5.6% [21,22]. In children and adolescents referred for testicular US due to any scrotal problem, TM prevalence ranged between 1.1 and 2.0% [23,24,25]. To our knowledge, there are no reported studies investigating TM in patients with CAH.…”

“…The co-occurrence of TM with testicular malignancy has been reported to range between 7.5 and 45% in adult patients [9,23]. Leenen and Riebel [24] detected a testicular tumor in 2 of 16 pediatric patients with TM.…”

“…Testicular microlithiasis (TM), the presence of multiple small deposits of calcium within the testis, shows characteristic sonographic findings of multiple, intratesticular, nonshadowing echogenic foci. Since the original description of ultrasounddetected TM (Doherty et al, 1987), a number of studies have reported an association between TGCT and TM (Backus et al, 1994;Miller et al, 1996Miller et al, , 2006Cast et al, 2000;Bach et al, 2001;Bennett et al, 2001;Derogee et al, 2001;Middleton et al, 2002;Sakamoto et al, 2006). All the studies report ultrasound findings for men investigated for a suspect testicular pathology (infertility, hydrocele, varicocele or suspected tumour) and compare the rate of TM in men found to have TGCT with those that have other diagnoses, including normal testes.…”

“…We suggest that NB in the TM group may cause some cases of epididymal cysts, and further study about the association between NB and epididymal cysts will be needed. Other studies have shown an association between testicular tumors and TM (von Eckardstein et al, 2001;Ringdahl et al, 2004;Miller et al, 2007). All patients enrolled in our study were informed about monthly self-examinations.…”
