“…The number of Sertoli cells per cross-sectioned tubule seems to be a constant and has been considered useful in the evaluation of the seminiferous epithelium through calculation of the Sertoli cell ratio for each germ cell type . Although the numbers of all germ cell types decrease with advancing age, the same does not occur with the Sertoli cell ratio because Sertoli cells are also lost with age (Johnson, 1986;Paniagua et al, 1987b). In a quantitative study of germ cell types in elderly men (Paniagua et al, 1987b), the Sertoli cell ratio to elongated spermatids was decreased in most of these men, the Sertoli cell ratio to round spermatids only appeared decreased in some groups of elderly men in the ninth decade of the life, and the Sertoli cell ratios for spermatogonia and spermatocytes remained constant in most men even in the ninth decade of life.…”
