Testicular volume and elasticity changes in young children with undescended testes

Abstract: Aims: To evaluate the differences and changes of testicular volume and elasticity in normal (NL) testes and undescended testes (UDTs) of children using shear wave elastography (SWE).Materials and methods: Testicular ultrasound images from children younger than 60 months old were retrospectively reviewed. Testicular volumes and elasticities were compared between the UDT group and NL group. In patients with unilateral UDT (uUDT), we also compared the values between uUDT and contralateral grossly normal (CGN) tes… Show more

“…Elastography was also applied in testicular pathology, including tumors and spermatogenic function in infertile patients [22][23][24]. Using Young's modulus, the Emean (mean stiffness) values fit to evaluate the hardness of tissue diffuse lesions [16,25], and the Emax values are most valuable for determining the hardness of focal lesions [26,27].…”

“…Clinical decision-making and postoperative management of cryptorchidism is determined by its presence and location [ 4 ]. As the criterion standard for functional evaluation, histological biopsy is rarely acceptable because of ethical issues [ 5 ]. Detection of levels in the serum of hormones such as follicle-stimulating hormone and testosterone is of limited clinical value due to the compensation of the contralateral testis.…”

“…Calculating the difference between the stiffness value measured during normal breathing and that measured during the Valsalva maneuver has another advantage over simply utilizing the absolute stiffness value during normal breathing. In particular, a single measurement of SWE under a certain condition (such as normal breathing) may have limited utility in the diagnosis of adolescent varicocele because testicular stiffness tends to decrease as the testicular volume increases during normal growth [ 17 ]. A dynamic provocation test could be more helpful than a static test in diagnosing varicocele, and SWE measurements during both normal breathing and the Valsalva maneuver may be useful for evaluating varicocele in adolescents.…”
