Testing of low-temperature stabilization alternatives for salt containing mixed wastes -- Approach and results to date

Abstract: Through its annual process of identifying technology deficiencies associated with waste treatment, the Department of Energy's (DOE)Mixed Waste Focus Area (MWFA) determined that the former DOE weapons complex lacks efficient mixed waste stabilization technologies for salt containing wastes. These wastes were generated as sludge and solid effluents from various primary nuclear processes involving acids and metal f~s h i n g ; and well over 10,000 cubic meters .exist at 6 complex sites. In addition, future volume… Show more

“…Another source of industrial salt-containing wastes includes the 200 million kilograms of chloride, sulfate, and nitrate salts, contaminated with toxic metals and low-level radioactive elements, which are distributed among the various Department of Energy sites around the nation. Attempts to dispose of this low-level radioactive waste generate an additional 5 million kilograms of salt wastes per year …”

“…Encapsulation using polymeric matrixes or composite polymers usually relies on the use of volatile and flammable organic solvents . Salt loading in grout is limited because large amounts of salt prevent setting and lead to poor leaching control. ,, …”
