Text-line examination for document forgery detection

Abstract: In this paper, an approach for forgery detection using text-line information is presented. In questioned document examination, text-line rotation and alignment can be important clues for detecting tampered documents. Measuring and detecting such mis-rotations and mis-alignments are a cumbersome task. Therefore, an automated approach for verification of documents based on these two text-line features is proposed in this paper. An in-depth evaluation of the proposed methods shows its usefulness in the context of… Show more

“…In document forgery detection, some methods focus on device type identification. Some methods examine the tampered characters based on text-line alignment; 13,14 these methods are suitable for the examination of tampered lines in the document, but not for individual characters. In practice, few forgery judicial cases relate to distinct device types; the identification of character morphology in different devices is simpler.…”

“…The true negative rate experiences a slight decrease. It lies in the interval [0.98, 0.99] instead of [1,1]. In the single document matching technique, the new document is matched using RAST algorithm only to the document with the representative layout of the whole training set.…”

“…Several approaches may be used to falsify a document. For example, documents may be copied using copying machines, remade using word processing software or scanned, digitally modified and finally printed [1]. During the scanning and printing processes involved in creating scan/print type forgeries, some distortions are introduced in the document.…”

“…One tackles printer identification in order to verify if the document in question has been printed by the original printer (see [1], [2], [3], [4], [5] and [6]). The other examines the document for irregularities that might have occurred during modification or fraud ( [7], [8] and [9]). …”

“…Detecting document irregularities has been tackled by [7] where document text lines are examined for misalignment to detect a fraudulent modification. Similarly font differences and over-similarity of characters within a document have been examined in [9] to detect forgery.…”
