Mineralogical and gemorphological characterization of sand dunes in the eastern part of United Arab Emirates using orbital remote sensing integrated with field investigations

“…Dune sands are mainly multicyclic, being derived from pre-existing recycled sediments as evidenced by their markedly high textural and mineral maturity. It is believed that their major parts were sourced by the dominant northwest winds (ElShamal) from dune fields in other localities in the UAE, Qatar and Ar Rub' Al Khali (Abu-Zeid et al, 2001). This explains the close similarities in the textural, heavy-mineral compositions and image gray-scale tones between these dunes and those in the study area (Ahlbrandt, 1979;Alsharhan et al, 1995;El Sayed, 2000;Abu-Zeid et al, 2001).…”
