Thalidomide Inhibits the Growth and Progression of Hepatic Epithelioid Hemangioendothelioma

Abstract: Hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (HEH) is a rare vascular tumor of the liver with an unpredictable malignant potential. Its growth can lead to hepatic failure, extrahepatic metastasis and death. Surgical resection or liver transplantation is the treatment of choice if metastasis is not identified. Several antineoplastic agents have been proposed for cases of nonresectable HEH. We report the case of a 52-year-old patient with HEH metastatic to the lungs who was successfully treated with oral thalidomide… Show more

“…Recently, a novel alternative therapy targeting angiogenesis, for e.g. thalidomide or metronomic cyclophosphamide, has been found to be promising [12][13][14]. The 5-year survival rates for hepatic EHE patients with liver resection, chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and no treatment are 75%, 30% and 5% respectively [11].…”

“…Immunostaining with Factor VIII antigen or CD-34 antigen confirms the cell of origin. They are primarily treated surgically; adjunctive therapies like radiotherapy, chemotherapy and anti-angiogenic therapies (interferon-alpha and thalidomide) can be used in unresectable tumours [15] . Preoperative embolisation or sclerotherapy has been tried in giant lesions to reduce blood loss or improve resectability.…”
