The 2012 dengue outbreak in Madeira: exploring the origins

Abstract: In 2012, Madeira reported its first major outbreak of dengue. To identify the origin of the imported dengue virus, we investigated the interconnectivity via air travel between dengue-endemic countries and Madeira, and compared available sequences against GenBank. There were 22,948 air travellers to Madeira in 2012, originating from twenty-nine dengue-endemic countries; 89.6% of these international travellers originated from Venezuela and Brazil. We developed an importation index that takes into account both tr… Show more

“…During the epidemic period, 81 cases were exported to continental Europe, with 11 reported cases in Portugal and 70 in other European countries [9]. Analysis of blood samples from Madeira's patients identified the circulating virus as belonging to dengue serotype 1 (DENV1) with strong sequence similarity to genotypes circulating in Venezuela, Brazil and Columbia at the time [9], [11], [12].…”

“…Travellers contribute to the spread of dengue globally which for example has led to the dengue outbreak in Europe in 2012, in the Island of Madeira (Portugal) (Wilder-Smith et al 2014). Data on air passengers and air travel patterns may help identify risks for importation (Napoli et al 2012, Sessions et al 2013).…”

“…30 Brasil e Venezuela tiveram de longe os maiores índices de importação de dengue (índice que leva em conta o volume de viagens e a incidência de dengue no país de origem) para a Madeira em 2012. 47 Sabendo que os quatro serotipos circulam na América do Sul, 4 é de admitir, por mecanismos análogos, a introdução de novos serotipos na Madeira no futuro.…”
