The 2018 periodontitis case definition improves accuracy performance of full-mouth partial diagnostic protocols

Abstract: We aimed to compare the accuracy performance of the new 2018 periodontitis case definition by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP)/ American Association of Periodontology (AAP) with Centers for Disease Control (CDC)/AAP 2012 in full-mouth partial recording protocols (PRP). Retrospective data from NHANES 2011-2012 and 2013-2014 were analyzed. For each case definition, full-mouth diagnostic was defined as the reference standard. Patients were diagnosed for the presence of periodontitis and staging for… Show more

“…Notwithstanding, this survey has numerous strengths, including being the first study to employ ABM with a comprehensive clinical assessment of periodontal parameters as a "Need" factor, and to incorporate important variables such as diabetic status with HbA1c levels, interproximal cleaning, tooth loss, denture stability, PRA and self-perceived stress. In addition, the strengths include the representativeness and global geographic coverage based on the FHU where the study was carried out, the sample size calculation stratified for each FHU [12], the strict followed and the employment of the new AAP/EFP case definition enabling future comparability across studies [44,75,76].…”

“…Dentists and other oral health professionals could represent an underestimated source of support and opportunity to help relieve the burden of hypertension. Additional strengths in our study included the detailed full-mouth protocol of dental examination so as to increase accuracy and precision [67], and a comprehensive analysis plan.…”

“…The results provided by our investigation have some notable strengths, as previously proposed [9]. We employed a full-mouth protocol with circumferential inspection, ensuring precise estimation of the prevalence and extent of periodontitis [38]. Also, we used the new AAP/EFP joint case definition with an up-to-date diagnosis with PD and CAL combination analysis.…”
