The 7-Item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale as a Tool for Measuring Generalized Anxiety in Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract: Background: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is common in multiple sclerosis (MS) but understudied. Reliable and valid measures are needed to advance clinical care and expand research in this area. The objectives of this study were to examine the psychometric properties of the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) in individuals with MS and to analyze correlates of GAD.

“…As a short and objective self-report measure showing strong properties as a screening tool 11 , researchers have tested its psychometric characteristics in several settings. In this context, over the last decade, GAD-7 has been presented as a reliable and valid questionnaire in different languages 14,15,16,17,18 including Portuguese 19 , with heterogeneous psychiatric samples 20,21 for specific medical conditions 22,23,24,25 in the general population 26 and in geriatric samples 27 . However, the one-dimensional nature of GAD-7 proposed by the original model is not consistent in the literature.…”

“…Like PHQ-9, GAD-7 has been validated in recent studies when utilised for screening within primary care (Mohd Sidik et al, 2012), perinatal care (Zhong et al, 2015) and applied to complex medical problems such as MS 9 (Terrill et al, 2015). The GAD-7 produces a score between 0-21.…”
