The Abdominal Adipofascial Flap

Abstract: We have showed feasibility of monitoring microcirculatory hemodynamics of the abdominal adipofascial flap model in rat. This model can be applied for intravital recordings of peripheral adipose tissue physiology and in different research scenarios such as the effects of ischemia reperfusion injury, effects of surgical trauma and wound healing studies with application of different pharmacologic agents and treatment protocols.

“…9 These flaps were used for varying focuses of research successfully, but all require a certain degree of microsurgical including vessel dissections and/or ligations. 6,8,9,[14][15][16] Versatile use of adipofascial flaps in experimental research led us to seek a more accessible alternative demanding less time and surgical effort, which not only benefits the researcher, but also the animal. Short operative time decreases the amounts of anesthetic agents and thus undesired loss of subjects can be avoided.…”

“…In the scarce literature, currently available adipofascial flap models include epigastric, groin, and Rubens flaps based on the superficial epigastric, superficial circumflex iliac, and deep circumflex iliac vessels, respectively 9 .
