“…The study ® ndings provide further con® rmation that HPV plays a major aetiological role in acetowhite lesions of the penile mucosa which show histological evidence of koilocytosis which has also been shown in other studies 16,17 . Our results also con® rm the relative speci® city of histological koilocytosis in conjunction with clinical acetowhitening as an indicator of HPV infection.…”

“…In the past few years, molecular biological techniques for the identification of HPV DNA or RNA have developed quickly [7,14,15]. These molecular tools [HC, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), in situ hybridization] permit the confirmation and direct classification of the virus, are equally applicable in [17], HPV infection is more frequent in male patients with recurrent balanoposthitis [10] and HPV is common among the male partners of HPV-positive women (even if the man is circumcised) [18]. The frequency of PCR-confirmed HPV infections among males attending STD clinics varies from 28% to 29.1% [11], whereas among volunteer soldiers undergoing military service in Finland, evidence for HPV DNA was obtained in 16.5% of cases [8].…”
