The achromatic chessboard, a new concept of a phase shifter for nulling interferometry

Abstract: Context. Nulling interferometry in the mid-IR using two telescopes (commonly referred to a Bracewell interferometer) is one possible way of directly detecting exoplanets in the habitable zone and their characterisation in terms of possible life signatures. A large wavelength domain is needed to simultaneously detect the infrared spectral features of a set of a bio-tracers. An achromatic phase shift of π is then required, and we previously presented a new concept for such a function that allows a simple design … Show more

“…However, our simulations, when considering a realistic device, do reproduce to some extent this loss of performance, which should thus be ascribed to the manufacturing error in the cells thickness. This was expected (see Pelat et al 2010), and we do confirm by those measurements that the chessboards performance is quite sensitive to the errors on cells thicknesses.…”

“…The dark fringe interferometry must include a device which induces an achromatic phase shift of π, and this is precisely what the device presented in this article does. The principles of this device were exposed in several previous publications [6][7][8][9] . It can be depicted as two square grids of cellular phase shifters, which are glass plates whose thickness and location are precisely defined.…”
