The Acquisition Rate and Soundness of a Low-Cost Data Acquisition System (LC-DAQ) for High Frequency Applications

Abstract: This article presents a novel and reliable low-cost data acquisition solution for high frequency and real-time applications in vehicular dynamics. Data acquisition systems for highly dynamic systems based on low-cost platforms face different challenges such as a constrained data retrieval rate. Basic data reading functions in these platforms are inefficient and, when used, they limit electronics acquisition rate capabilities. This paper explains a new low-cost, modular and open platform to read different types… Show more

“…In addition, there are several studies of prototypes of data acquisition systems [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ], but most lack the data for reproducibility, the collection capacity does not meet the vibration requirements or they contain a small number of channels. Bosso et al [ 14 ], present a multifunctional system prototype applied to railways, based on vibration and temperature collection; however, they do not test the efficiency of their algorithm relating to bearing vibration.…”

“…Bosso et al [ 14 ], present a multifunctional system prototype applied to railways, based on vibration and temperature collection; however, they do not test the efficiency of their algorithm relating to bearing vibration. Moreno et al [ 15 ] display a multi-sensor data acquisition system, capable of registering high frequencies. Nevertheless, they require a computer connection to control the capturing of records, a feature that limits implementation in equipment which is difficult to access that operates in movement.…”

“…One of the main goals of the present research is to develop a reliable low-cost acquisition system for acoustic purposes. The low-cost acquisition board chosen for the system is inspired in a previous work presented in [ 7 ]. It is based in an Arduino board; its sampling frequency reaches 3 kHz and its analog to digital converters have a resolution of 10 bits for a full scale of 5 V.…”

“…The Arduino board samples the analog inputs in each cycle of the firmware and sends them via serial communication over USB by means of a byte chain to the microcomputer. The protocol for sending data by serial communication was developed in [ 7 ]. The PC saves the data collected during the acquisition in a csv file which is post-processed.…”
