The Active Phytohormone in Microalgae: The Characteristics, Efficient Detection, and Their Adversity Resistance Applications

Abstract: Phytohormones are a class of small organic molecules that are widely used in higher plants and microalgae as chemical messengers. Phytohormones play a regulatory role in the physiological metabolism of cells, including promoting cell division, increasing stress tolerance, and improving photosynthetic efficiency, and thereby increasing biomass, oil, chlorophyll, and protein content. However, traditional abiotic stress methods for inducing the accumulation of energy storage substances in microalgae, such as high… Show more

“…The chemical essence of abscisic acid (ABA) is a 15‐carbon sesquiterpenoid compound that is widely distributed in higher plants and has significant effects on the physiological metabolism of algae (Wang et al, 2022). ABA can mitigate the deleterious effects of environmental stress on higher plants and microalgae (Khasin et al, 2018) and generate resistance to adverse conditions, such as drought, cold, disease, and salt stresses (Mahadi et al, 2022; Liu, Chen, et al, 2018).…”

“…Nevertheless, plant hormone metabolism in microalgae is not as well understood as in higher plants. The main challenges are the low concentrations of phytohormones in microalgae cells and the complex analytical detection techniques (Wang et al, 2022). Less information is known about the regulatory role of phytohormones in microalgae.…”

“…Due to among others the formation of excess reactive oxygen species in stress conditions, the accumulation of lipids is accompanied by inhibition of algal cell division 4 . Auxins are plant hormones whose function is related to detoxification of reactive oxygen species 5 . The indole-3-acetic acid auxin has been reported to increase the growth and metabolism regulation in green algae 6 8 .…”
