Abstract. ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is a detector designed to study the physics of strongly interacting matter produced in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Due to the complexity of ALICE in terms of number of detectors and performance requirements, Data Quality Monitoring (DQM) plays an essential role in providing online feedback on the data being recorded. It intends to provide shifters with precise and complete information to quickly identify problems, and as a consequence to ensure acquisition of high quality data. This paper presents a review of the ALICE DQM system during the first three years of LHC operations from a quantitative and qualitative point of view. We start by presenting the DQM software and tools before moving on to the various analyses carried out. An overview of the produced monitoring quantities is given, presenting the diversity of usage and flexibility of the DQM. Well-prepared shifters and experts, in addition to a precise organisation, were required to ensure smooth and successful operations. The description of the measures taken to ensure both aspects and an account of the DQM shifters' job are followed by a summary of the evolution of the system. We then give a quantitative review of the final setup of the system used during the whole year 2012. We conclude the paper with use cases where the DQM proved to be very valuable, scalable and efficient and with the plans for the coming years.

To address the data rate requirements for upcoming experiments in high energy physics, we present a configurable architecture for data concentration and event building, based on the AdvancedTCA and MicroTCA standards. The core component is a µTCA based module which connects a Lattice ECP3 FPGA to up to 8 front panel fiber ports for data input from front-end electronics. In addition, the fiber ports can distribute synchronization clock and configuration information from a central time distribution system. To buffer the incoming data, the module provides up to 2 soDIMM sockets for standard DDR3 memory modules. With different firmware functionality, the buffer module can then interface to a µTCA shelf backplane via e.g. PCI Express. To allow event building for more than 8 input links, 4 buffer modules can be combined on an ATCA carrier card, which connects to the high speed links on the µTCA connector. The connections between the 4 µTCA cards and the ATCA backplane can then be configured dynamically by a passive crosspoint switch on the ATCA carrier card. Thus, multiple event building topologies can be configured on the carrier card and within the full ATCA shelf to adapt to different system sizes and communication patterns.

Abstract-The NA60 experiment was designed to identify signatures of a new state of matter, the Quark Gluon Plasma, in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchroton. The apparatus is composed of four main detectors: a muon spectrometer (MS), a zero degree calorimeter (ZDC), a silicon vertex telescope (VT), and a silicon microstrip beam tracker (BT). The readout of the whole experiment is based on a PCI architecture. The basic unit is a general purpose PCI card, interfaced to the different subdetectors via custom mezzanine cards. This allowed us to successfully implement several completely different readout protocols (from the VME like protocol of the MS to the custom protocol of the pixel telescope). The system was fully tested with proton and ion beams, and several million events were collected in 2002 and 2003. This paper presents the readout architecture of NA60, with particular emphasis on the PCI layer common to all the subdetectors.
