The Alien Chinese Mitten Crab, Eriocheir Sinensis (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura), in the Thames Catchment

Abstract: Eriocheir sinensis, the Chinese mitten crab, is a native of east Asia and predominantly lives in freshwater but migrates seawards to breed. In 1912 a specimen was collected in the River Aller, a tributary of the Weser, Germany and now this exotic species has a European distribution from Finland to the Atlantic coast of southern France. In the UK, the mitten crab has been reported from the Humber, Medway and Thames catchments. Although the population in Thames had remained low, recent evidence suggests it is in… Show more

“…This crab is known to make physiological responses to salinity changes which can serve to offset changes in zinc speciation caused by such changes (see above). (2) Eriocheir sinensis, the Chinese mitten crab, an introduced alien in Britain, which spends its adult life in freshwater, migrating to river estuaries to breed (Clark et al 1998). These crabs are extremely euryhaline, tolerating the full range of salinities from freshwater to marine.…”

“…In North America and Europe, however, it is a successful invasive species. Its European range stretches from Portugal and the U.K. to Finland and Russia (CABRAL and COSTA, 1999;CLARK et al, 1998;HAAHTELA, 1963;INGLE, 1986). Unlike the other two alien species, E. sinensis has also been recorded in terrestrial habitats during its migration, e.g.…”

“…Where the Chinese mitten crab became invasive in Europe or North America, the species greatly affected biodiversity, commercial fishing, angling, river bank erosion, especially in banks with steep gradient along sections with fluctuations in water level, e.g. below dams used for peak electricity production (CABRAL and COSTA, 1999;CLARK et al, 1998;HERBORG et al, 2003;INGLE, 1986). At present, no research programs exist on this species in Hungary.…”

“…This species has been present within the UK since 1935, introduced either through ballast water or intentional introduction, and had become well established by 1973 (Herborg et al, 2005). Subsequently E. sinensis numbers have increased greatly within the Thames (Clark et al, 1998;Gilbey et al, 2008).…”
