The Amniotic Fluid Lecithin : Sphingomyelin Area Ratio (Lsar) in Pregnancies Complicated by Diabetes

Abstract: Summary The lecithin : sphingomyelin area ratio (LSAR) was measured in 108 samples of amniotic fluid obtained after 32 weeks' gestation from 66 pregnant diabetics and in 34 samples from 27 women with latent diabetes during pregnancy. A previously reported finding that the normal terminal rise in the ratio did not occur in approximately one‐third of such patients was confirmed. The clinical value of this test, in timing delivery to minimize the risk of neonatal respiratory distress, is discussed; its routine us… Show more

“…3.5 Accelerated maturation/delayed maturation [56,156,173,199] In normal pregnancy there is good correlation between the L/S ratio and gestational age of the fetus. However, in about 25 percent of pregnancies, nearly all characterized äs high risk pregnancies, the L/S ratio and thus the functional maturity of the lungs of the fetus do not correlate with gestational age.…”

“…L/S ratio may provided that the L/S ratio exceeds two. In transidecrease below two, and RDS may result despite tional L/S ratios, PG may or may not appear an L/S ratio that once was mature [199]. Problems immediately following birth and the condition such äs severe hemolytic disease, placenta previa, varies accordingly from normal to transient tachypnea to RDS.…”
