“…Changes to policy that regulate zoo operations nationally and internationally is placing animal welfare as a key consideration when captive wild species are managed by humans. Healthy animals, performing species appropriate behaviors are more likely to have a positive influence on zoo visitors ( Miller, 2012 ; Godinez et al, 2013 ; Sampaio et al, 2021 ) and this is supportive of the zoo’s key educational and engagement outputs. As different zoo-housed species elicit different emotional responses in visitors, and such emotional responses can be overwhelmingly positive ( Myers et al, 2004 ), any perception of animal welfare is important for developing positive emotional states in zoo visitors.…”

“…The effect that an anchor can have on members of the public when used in food animal welfare campaigns has not been explored. However, Sampaio et al (2021) argued that anchoring can be an effective tool to improve animal welfare in zoos by releasing videos of zoos with high animal welfare standards to the public, hence evoking negative reactions and requests for change from people when visiting zoos with lower standards. We also encourage future work to investigate whether knowledge of another animal industry translated to greater acceptance of current management practices in dairy.…”

“…In turn, positive emotional experiences and satisfaction were pivotal factors in the decision making of zoo visitors when considering revisiting [147], and emotional experience may also impact conservation learning [148]. In contrast, negative perceptions of welfare were reported to reduce the likelihood of visiting [2,9,56,67,106,[149][150][151][152], and donating to conservation efforts [2,88,103,153]. Yet, the qualitative data presented in several of the reviewed studies suggest that negative perceptions of welfare may not always impact visit likelihood.…”
