The Application of Gene Expression Profiling in Predictions of Occult Lymph Node Metastasis in Colorectal Cancer Patients

Abstract: A key factor in determining the likely outcome for a patient with colorectal cancer is whether or not the tumour has metastasised to the lymph nodes—information which is also important in assessing any possibilities of lymph node resection so as to improve survival. In this review we perform a wide-range assessment of literature relating to recent developments in gene expression profiling (GEP) of the primary tumour, to determine their utility in assessing node status. A set of characteristic genes seems to be… Show more

“…We found that AJCC stage III and IV, which has nodal metastasis or organ metastasis, was associated with OS and DFS in the TCGA database. AJCC TNM stage was established based on OS, and lymph node involvement in itself is considered to have a strong influence on OS and DFS in CRC [16]. In oral squamous cell carcinoma and papillary thyroid carcinoma, GLUT3 was known to be a prognostic marker for OS, and was associated with advanced cancer stage (AJCC TNM stage III and IV) which has nodal metastasis [8, 17].…”

“…However, most of the cases are asymptomatic until the later stages, and, therefore, the treatment process may not be entirely successful. According to statics, nearly 40% of patients with CRC confront cancer recurrence within 5 years following surgery (Meyerhardt et al, ; Peyravian et al, ).…”

“…Colon cancer has become a major challenge in medical science for reasons such as high incidence and mortality. Although current therapeutic strategies, including radiotherapy, surgery, and chemotherapy, are widely used in the treatment of patients with early stages of CRC, their efficiency in treating the patients with advanced colon cancer is limited (Peyravian et al, 2018). Cancer recurrence and metastasis are the main obstacles to improving the survival of patients with advanced CRC and therefore, finding new treatment strategies, and effective biomarkers are of particular importance in patients with colorectal cancer.…”
