The Arecibo L-band Feed Array Zone of Avoidance (ALFAZOA) Shallow Survey

Abstract: The Arecibo L-band Feed Array Zone of Avoidance (ALFAZOA) Shallow Survey is a blind Hi survey of the extragalactic sky behind the northern Milky Way conducted with the ALFA receiver on the 305m Arecibo Radio Telescope. ALFAZOA Shallow covered 900 square degrees at full sensitivity from 30 • ≤ l ≤ 75 • and |b| ≤ 10 • and an additional 460 square degrees at limited sensitivity at latitudes up to 20 • . It has an rms sensitivity of 5 -7 mJy and a velocity resolution of 9 -20.6 km s −1 , and detected 403 galaxies … Show more

“…H I is an ideal diagnostic tool for studying processes in clusters because of its sensitivity to the environment. It has also proved most effective at detecting galaxies at low Galactic latitudes (Kraan-Korteweg et al 1994;van Driel et al 2009;Henning et al 2010;McIntyre et al 2015;Staveley-Smith et al 2016;Sanchez-Barrantes et al 2019). However, it is unsuitable for tracing the dominant galaxy population of clusters which primarily comprises gas-poor, early-type galaxies.…”

“…The Arecibo L-band Feed Array Zone of Avoidance Shallow Survey is currently the complete H I survey for the ZoA area in the northern sky. It conducted a neutral hydrogen blind survey in an area of 1360 square degrees with extremely high sensitivity, detected 403 galaxies with a redshift velocities of 12,000 km s −1 , authenticated locations of large-scale structures such as C7, Cζ, Pegasus, Corona Borealis, and Delphinus structures (Sanchez- Barrantes et al 2019), and further refined our understanding of the local universe.…”

“…Hoppmann et al (2015) detected 102 galaxies in 60% of the total survey with an rms of 80 µJy (at 10 km s −1 ) in the RFIfree regions. The 'ALFA Zone of Avoidance Survey' (Henning et al 2010;Sanchez-Barrantes et al 2019) covers the low-Galactic-latitude region with the goal to uncover heavily obscured or hidden galaxies out to 12 000 km s −1 and trace large-scale structure behind the Milky Way.…”
