The Association Between Age at Initiation of Alcohol Consumption and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Cohort Study of 0.5 Million Persons in China

Abstract: It is well known that alcohol consumption is associated with type 2 diabetes. However, the association between age of alcohol onset (AAO) and drinking duration with type 2 diabetes among Chinese adults is not fully understood. Our study was based on the data from the China Kadoorie Biobank, which included 512,712 participants aged 30–79 years in China from 2004–2008. Cox proportional-hazard model was used to estimate the association between AAO and drinking duration with type 2 diabetes. After adjustment for p… Show more

“…In this study, nearly 3% of geriatric admissions with known prediabetes demonstrated concomitant AUD. Various studies have evaluated the role of alcohol consumption in the development of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) 1,7,8 . Consumption of alcohol leads to the production of reactive oxygen species, which can impair B‐cell mitochondrial function, leading to apoptosis 1 .…”

“…Alcohol consumption leads to development of prediabetes and diabetes which ultimately can lead to its complications such as stroke. Li et al showed a positive correlation of dose‐dependent effect of duration of alcohol consumption with the development of impaired glucose tolerance 8 . Han et al found that alcohol intake of >57 g/day was associated with an increased risk of development of prediabetes and diabetes mellitus 7 .…”

“…It is essential to acknowledge that a delayed age of alcohol onset and a reduced drinking duration result in a decreased risk of T2DM, as emphasized by the largest prospective cohort of Chinese adults study, which comprised a total of 512,712 participants [73].…”

“…In another study, Tatsukawa et al [ 8 ] found that the risk of diabetes in the Japanese population was significantly positively correlated with trunk fat and significantly negatively correlated with leg fat. Li et al [ 9 ] revealed that the age of alcohol onset and drinking duration are risk factors for T2DM. (ii) Studies on relationship among the various risk factors have provided a basis and direction for the investigation of potential aetiologies of diabetes.…”
