The association between serum Sestrin2 and the risk of coronary heart disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract: Background Coronary heart disease (CHD) is one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Oxidative stress is one of the important contributors to the pathogenesis of CHD. Sestrin2 is a stress-induced antioxidant protein that plays a important role in T2DM and CHD. However, the relationship between serum Sestrin2 levels and T2DM with CHD remains unclear. Aim This study aimed to investigate the relation… Show more

“… Tian et al (2022) discovered a strong correlation between serum Sestrin2 levels and coronary heart disease (CHD) in diabetic patients, implying that serum Sestrin2 may contribute to the development and progression of CHD in individuals with diabetes. This research highlighted a direct role in the association between diabetes mellitus (DM) complicated with CHD and major adverse cardiac events (MACE).…”

“…Also, plasma Sestrin2 levels were found to be increased in patients with coronary heart disease (CAD) and positively related to the severity of CAD ( 184 , 186 ). However, lower serum Setrin2 levels were indicated in patients with septic cardiomyopathy and in T2DM patients with CHD ( 126 , 185 ). Low Sestrin2 level was a risk factor for CHD in T2DM patients ( 126 ).…”

The contradictory results concerning the beneficial or harmful effects of sestrin2 in cardiomyopathy and heart failure need to be further clarified.…”

“…Sestrin2 has been proposed to be the therapeutic target for various diseases, such as cardiac diseases, respiratory diseases, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease ( Ren D. et al, 2020 ; Sun et al, 2020 ; Wu D. et al, 2021 ). Sestrin2 has been reported to protect insulin-resistant cells by activating the AMPK pathway or upregulating the mTOR pathway ( Gong et al, 2021 ), thus promoting a beneficial effect on diabetes ( Tian et al, 2022 ).…”
