The atomic and magnetic structure of NdMn(6−x)FexGe6 solid solutions

Abstract: The magnetic and crystallographic properties of induction-melted NdMn (6Ϫx) Fe x Ge 6 intermetallics ͑xϭ0, 1.0, and 1.5͒ in the temperature range of 30-475 K have been studied by x-ray and neutron diffraction techniques and SQUID measurements. All of the samples crystallized in the YCo 6 Ge 6-type structure (P6/mmm). A small amount ͑Ͻ5 mol%͒ of Nd͑MnFe͒ 2 Ge 2 is present as an impurity. As expected, iron replaces manganese at the 3g site. The unit cell volume decreases slightly with increasing iron content at … Show more

“…The iron magnetic moments are antiferromagnetically coupled with the neodymium and manganese moments at all temperatures. In NdMn 6 Ge 6 , the angle between the magnetic moments and the c-axis changes [4] from 42 • at 30 K to 0 • at 150 K and then to 20 • at 300 K, in fair agreement with the earlier reported values [3]. These changes are further confirmed by the temperature dependence of the magnetization [4] which reveals two spin reorientations at ca.…”

The Curie temperature of NdMn 5.5 Fe 0.5 Ge 6 is 430 K. In NdMn 5 FeGe 6 , the angle between the neodymium and manganese magnetic moments and the c-axis changes [4] at 300 K, whereas the collinear iron magnetic moments are antiferromagnetically coupled.…”
