The Beaming Structures of Jupiter’s Decametric Common S-Bursts Observed From the Lwa1, Nda, and Uran2 Radio Telescopes

Abstract: On 2015 February 21, simultaneous observations of Jupiter's decametric radio emission between 10 and 33 MHz were carried out using three powerful low-frequency radio telescopes: Long Wavelength Array Station One (LWA1) in USA; Nançay Decameter Array (NDA) in France; and URAN2 telescope in Ukraine. We measure lag times of short-bursts (S-bursts) for 105-minutes of data over effective baselines up to 8460 km by using cross-correlation analysis of the spectrograms from each instrument. Of particular interest is t… Show more

“…The sources of these nonthermal emissions are distributed along auroral magnetic field lines at emission frequencies very close to the local electron cyclotron frequency, f ce (Imai et al, 2017a(Imai et al, , 2017bKurth, Imai, Hospodarsky, Gurnett, Louarn, et al, 2017;Kurth, Imai, Hospodarsky, Gurnett, Tetrick, et al, 2017). These sporadic bursts are believed to be the free space right-hand extraordinary (R-X) mode at various temporal scales from minutes down to milliseconds (Carr et al, 1983;Imai et al, 2016;Kurth et al, 2001).…”

“…These plots show that the flashlightlike beaming model fits well to the observed values. Based on these observations, Imai et al [2016] were further able to conclude that the S-burst has a minimum beaming (cone) thickness of 2.66" (i.e., the angular size estimated from the maximum baseline at LWA1-URAN2) in the east-west direction projected on Jupiter. Imai et al [2016], reproduced by permission of the AAS.…”

“…We have made simultaneous observations with the LWA1, the Nançay Decameter Array [Boischot et al, 1980;Lecacheux, 2000, NDA, in Nançay, France], and URAN2 [Brazhenko et al, 2005, located in Poltava, Ukraine] to undertake a cross-correlation analysis of Sbursts over baselines up to 8640 km [Imai et al, 2016]. Using 105 minutes of data, we have measured time lags of S-bursts using a cross-correlation analysis of the spectrograms from all three instruments.…”

“…Another example of simultaneous observations of Jovian decameter emission is described in the paper by Imai et al [2016]. Three radio telescopes were used in that study: LWA-1 (USA), NDA (France), and URAN-2 (Ukraine).…”
