The Belgian Systemic Sclerosis Cohort: Correlations Between Disease Severity Scores, Cutaneous Subsets, and Autoantibody Profile

Abstract: Our data indicate that the DSS can be used to define organ involvement in SSc. Differences can be seen between subsets classified not only according to cutaneous subtypes but also to autoantibody profile.

“…Patients were classified as having pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) if at right-sided heart catherization the mean pulmonary arterial pressure was 25 mm Hg at rest or 30 mm Hg during exercise, with a mean pulmonary artery wedge pressure of Ͻ15 mm Hg. Patients were classified as having interstitial lung disease (ILD) if they had an FVC Յ70% predicted and/or alveolitis or fibrosis on HRCT scan (excluding patients with PAH or significant airflow obstruction) (16). All patients were assessed by the same investigator (VS).…”

“…Anti-ENA results can be used to support or to assist the clinical diagnosis in patients with symptoms of a CTD (e.g., Raynaud phenomenon in SSc). In addition, in some CTD including SSc, the presence of specific ANA is also associated with particular disease manifestations emphasizing their use as prognostic markers [3]. However, in daily clinical practice anti-ENA tests are mostly ordered in patients with aspecific symptoms to exclude CTD.…”
