The objective of the study was to provide an updated checklist of benthic marine organisms in Pantai Remis (Selangor) and Blue Lagoon (Negeri Sembilan) in November 2022. The research areas comprised a total of 26 species of marine benthic organisms, which were divided into 12 orders, 18 families, and 22 genera. Benthic macrophytes formed the largest group (11 species), followed by other benthic macrofauna (molluscs, with eight species). In addition, three coral species, two gastropods, and two crabs were also recorded. The findings revealed that both sites are fertile and suitable habitats for marine benthic organisms. The established checklist of benthic organisms can serve as an ongoing basis for future reference as part of our efforts to develop coastal marine ecosystem management and conservation on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. In summary, the checklist of benthic organisms provides the basic information that is much needed for the protection of coastal ecosystems.

Traditional seismic oceanography researches dominantly pay attention to the oceanographic phenomena within the water column, such as internal wave, eddy, thermohaline fine structure, water mass boundaries, internal tide, thermohaline staircase, lee wave and so on, and could provide extra information quantitatively and qualitatively as compared with physical oceanography method. So far, very few researches try to study the water column near the seafloor, which is a significant boundary layer where water‐sediment dynamic interaction, cold seepage, hydrothermal vents, biochemical activities and energy dissipation of many oceanic processes may occur. To be different from previous seismic oceanography researches, this paper mainly focuses on seismic reflections of seawater columns near the seafloor, by reprocessing a large amount of seismic sections acquired in the west and north of the South China Sea.In this paper, conventional seismic facies analysis method is used to analyze, classify and summarize the external geometry, internal configuration, continuity, amplitude and apparent frequency of some complex seismic reflections of seawater column near the seafloor. Combined with the past research results of seismic oceanography, theory of bottom boundary layer and other various processes near the seafloor, this article not only classifies the reflection characteristics of meso‐scale eddies, internal solitary wave and Lee wave, but also speculates that some possible processes could result in a few of the newly discovered abnormal seismic reflections. For example, sheet seismic facies unit may reflect turbulent bottom boundary layer; hair‐like reflection configuration can be caused by the sediment resuspension, resulted from the interaction of bottom current and high frequency undulating seafloor, such as sand dunes; plume seismic facies unit indicates the characteristic of seep plume; and broom seismic facies unit could be associated with the upwelling currents and sediment resuspension in pockmarks. Results indicate that seismic oceanography can image not only processes of the ocean water column, such as internal wave and eddy, but also some complex processes near the seafloor, which greatly expands the research field of seismic oceanography and provides a new method and research perspective for the field observation of processes near the seafloor. Here, bottom boundary layer refers to the water column near the seafloor, and we call all the processes of this region “seafloor processes”.

The benthic oxygen demand and inorganic nutrient release have been investigated in the coastal zone of the Mid-Atlantic Bight of the United States using in situ and ship-board incubations t,o estimate fluxes across the sediment-water interface. Oxygen demand ranged from ca. 70 nil m-2 hr-1 nearshore in warm (25 "C) muddy sediments to ca. 4 ml m-? hr-1 in cold (6 "C), coarse-grained sediments offshore. Ammoniumionflux was out of the sediments in all but 4 of 29 incubations, while nitrate was often found to be utilized within or on t,he sediments, decreasing in 10 of 29 incubations. Those locations with fluxes of nitrate out of the sediment had concentrations in the pore water that were generally high, sometimes u p to several mM 1-*. Nitrate fluxes were always well below those of ammonia, even where high almost equivalent concentrations of both NH4 and NO:, were found a t the same locale.On George's Bank only 13 "/o of total N demand b y the phytoplankton was estimated to be supplied by the benthos, whereas in New York Bight the supply amounted to 42 "/o of the demand. This difference can be attributed t o higher pelagic biological and advective (mixing and upwelling) inputs to George's Bank compared to the relatively well stratified New York Bight in late summer and autumn.
