The Big, the Bad, and the Average: Hedonic Prices and Inverse Demand for Baltic Cod

Abstract: A B S T R A C TThe price of fish depends on quality attributes such as size and freshness. In turn, quality attributes are related to fishery management. This article presents a hedonic analysis where attribute prices of size and quality ratings are estimated for the Swedish Baltic cod fishery. Using information from 5,307 landing days, hedonic inverse demand functions are estimated with a random coefficient (RC) model. Results show that there are price premiums for larger sizes of cod and for cod with the hig… Show more

“…The latter is consistent with recent studies using hedonic price models to estimate the price premium of size and quality (e.g., Lee 2014;Hammarlund 2015). Thus, it is important to take these differences into account when estimating bargaining power.…”

“…First we estimate the hedonic price model of tuis and, second, the implicit price model of the fourteen most abundant species groups in our sample. For the purpose of our analysis, we consider a set of intrinsic and extrinsic attributes that have been shown to determine seafood quality in previous studies (Hammarlund 2015;Larkin et Sylvia 1999;McConnell et Strand 2000).…”

“…The trips that lasted for 10 days were paid less than US$0.15 equivalent to 337.5 TZS. Another factor is the management of a fish stock that changes the quantity of attributes as this will also change the prices of fish (Hammarlund, 2013).…”
