The Bogazici face database: Standardized photographs of Turkish faces with supporting materials

Abstract: Many sets of human facial photographs produced in Western cultures are available for scientific research. We report here on the development of a face database of Turkish undergraduate student targets. High-resolution standardized photographs were taken and supported by the following materials: (a) basic demographic and appearance-related information, (b) two types of landmark configurations (for Webmorph and geometric morphometrics (GM)), (c) facial width-to-height ratio (fWHR) measurement, (d) information on … Show more

“…What we found was that mean formidability rating of all three stimuli types on a 7-point scale ≈ 4 (ranging from 2 to 6.2) and skewness of all three stimuli types were between 0.097 and 0.189 (Table 2) and data followed normal distribution. For attractiveness, mean ratings for all three stimuli types were between 2.8 and 2.93 (ranging from 1.7 to 4.8) and skewness between 0.111 and 0.578 (Table 2), hence comparable to average ratings of male facial attractiveness in other studies (e.g., Saribay et al, 2018). It thus seems that the specific nature of our sample does not impede generalization of our finding.…”

“…Stimuli were manufactured using the same methods used in previous studies of preferences for sexual dimorphism in face shape (e.g., DeBruine et al 2010;Jones et al 2018;Perrett et al 1998), from an open access set of Turkish face images (Saribay et al 2018), and using standard computer graphic methods implemented in webmorph.org (DeBruine 2018; Tiddeman et al 2001). Eleven images of people wearing glasses or headscarves that obscured the face were removed from the image set.…”

“…Stimuli including individuals from European, Asian, African American, and Hispanic descent are taken from the Chicago Face Database(Ma, Correll, & Wittenbrink, 2015). Pictures of Turkish individuals from a Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, or Balkan background are taken from the Bogazici database(Saribay et al, 2018). For each picture, TEARS TRIGGER SOCIAL SUPPORT INTENTIONS tears are digitally added using a procedure developed byKüster (2015; see Figure 1for an example).…”
