The Bohm criterion for the dusty plasma sheath

Abstract: The Bohm criterion for the dusty plasma sheath is investigated with a fluid model. It is shown that the presence of dust particles near the interface between the bulk plasma and the sheath should have effects upon the ion Mach number. The dust particles charging and density variation are taken into account, and therefore the self-consistent relation between the dust surface potential and ion Mach number at the sheath edge is derived. The numerical results reveal that both the ion critical Mach number and the d… Show more

“…Taking the average viscosity value ofη ≈ 0.15 (η ≈ paring it to the ratio ν/η = 1.64 × 10 13 kg −1 , as obtained when applying Method 1, we estimate the effective dust-background collision frequency to be ν ≈ 3.7 s −1 . This value is slightly higher than the approximated dust-neutral collision frequency defined as ν dn = δ(4π/3)r 2 d n n v n m n /m d ≈ 3.1 s −1 , where r d and m d are the dust radius and mass; n n , v n and m n are the neutral number density, average speed and mass, respectively, δ = 1.26 [30].…”

“…The MF particles have a diameter of 9.19 ± 0.09 µm and mass density of 1.51 g/cm 3 , while the PS particles have a diameter of 11.36 ± 0.12 µm and mass density of 1.05 g/cm 3 . Gas pressure was maintained at about 0.65 Pa; the corresponding neutral gas damping rate was γ 0.77 s −1 for MF particles and γ 0.91 s −1 for PS particles [22]. Further experimental parameters are listed in Table 1.…”

“…The Bohm criterion in a dusty plasma has been theoretically studied by many authors (Yu, Saleem & Luo 1992; Ma & Yu 1995; Liu et al. 2003; Yaroshenko et al. 2009; Chung 2014; Fouial, Tahraoui & Annou 2016) under a variety of scenarios; however, an experimental cross-verification of various theoretical results remains to be carried out.…”
