The Breakthrough Listen Search for Intelligent Life: Searching Boyajian's Star for Laser Line Emission

Abstract: Boyajian' s Star (KIC 8462852) has received significant attention due to its unusual periodic brightness fluctuations detected by the Kepler Spacecraft and subsequent ground based observations. Possible explanations for the dips in the photometric measurements include interstellar or circumstellar dust, and it has been speculated that an artificial megastructure could be responsible. We analyze 177 highresolution spectra of Boyajian's Star in an effort to detect potential laser signals from extraterrestrial ci… Show more

“…At optical wavelengths, the Automated Planet Finder telescope in California, USA, (Radovan et al 2014) is conducting a search for laser lines in highresolution spectra (e.g. Lipman et al 2019). BL is currently conducting a survey of several thousand nearby stars, 100 nearby galaxies, and the Galactic plane; fur- ther details may be found in Isaacson et al (2017).…”

“…For example, when the interstellar object 'Oumuamua passed through the solar system, BL conducted dedicated observations of it using the GBT (Enriquez et al 2018). Another example is BL's campaign to observe Boyajian's Star for optical laser line emission, using the Automated Planet Finder at the Lick Observatory (Lipman et al 2019).…”

“…The primary star survey was revisited by Wlodarczyk-Sroka et al (2020) showing that the first few analyses of Breakthrough Listen (BL) radio data have surveyed many background stars in addition to the targeted nearby stars. An optical survey of the nearby star sample with the Automated Planet Finder at Lick Observatory gives BL a reach beyond the radio enabling SETI searches in high resolution optical spectroscopy (Isaacson et al 2019;Lipman et al 2019). As the fields of astronomy and machine learning become more intertwined, enhanced searches for narrowband radio signals (Brzycki et al 2020) will add to those utilizing machine learning to search for fast radio bursts (Zhang et al 2018).…”

“…A raw 2D echelle spectrum (figure fromLipman et al 2019) of Boyajian's Star, 4,608 pixels in the dispersion direction and 2,080 pixels in the spatial direction, containing 79 spectral orders. The zoomed image in the upper-right corner is a segment of one of these spectral orders, which shows a cosmic ray in the bottom right corner.…”
