The Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) Made Easy

Abstract: : The main advantage of the BI-RADS system is that when correctly applied, the ACR and BI-RADS classifications are the only necessary tools for a practical and scientific communication between radiologists and clinicians regarding the breast findings. The BI-RADS provides a common standardized language of communication by minimizing subjective interpretations. A non-specialist clinician, without an in-depth knowledge of breast imaging, should be assisted on how to manage or refer patients based on standard alg… Show more

“…Ultrasound features included background echotexture, nodular size, shape, margin, internal echo, echo intensity, calcification, alder grade, resistance index and axillary lymph node. These ultrasound features for each nodule were graded according to the BI-RADS lexicon 9 . Background echotexture can be classified as either homogeneous or heterogeneous.…”

“…Analysis of blood samples indicated markedly low hemoglobin level (48 g/l; normal range: 110–150 g/l) and platelet count (39×10 9 /l; normal range: 100–300×10 9 /l) with high levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA; 203.70 ng/ml; normal range: 0–5 ng/ml), carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125; 2,267 U/ml; normal range: 0–35 U/ml) and CA15-3 (4,754 U/ml; normal range: 0–25 U/ml). Contrast-enhanced breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) revealed right-sided breast malignant tumor with breast imaging-reporting and data system score of 5 ( 15 ) and the possibility of multiple axillary lymph nodes and multiple systemic bone metastases ( Fig. 1 ).…”
