The by-catch situation in German brown shrimp (Crangon crangonL.) fisheries with particular reference to plaice (Pleuronectes platessaL.)

Abstract: Summary Since 1928 and over the history of German fishing for brown shrimp (Crangon crangon L.), several investigations have been made examining the by‐catch of this small‐meshed fishery. By‐catch of commercially valuable fish, particularly flatfish species, has always been a matter of concern. The amount of by‐catch comprising fish and invertebrates may actually be high, but figures discussed in public are biased by including discarded undersized shrimp, the target species, and dead material. Many changes in … Show more

“…The brown shrimp ( Crangon crangon ) fishery is socio-economically one of the most important fisheries in the North Sea [ 1 , 2 ]. It supports an international fleet of approximately 560 vessels [ 3 ], employing more than 1,000 fishermen, and producing yearly revenues of up to ~€100 million [ 4 ].…”

“…However, in recent years, brown shrimp producer organisations have initiated a certification process of the fishery by the Marine Stewardship Council. A key finding for successful certification was the need to investigate gear technology on codend selectivity, which should improve the exploitation patterns of brown shrimp [ 1 , 4 ].…”

“…For shellfish, black tiger shrimp and giant freshwater prawn were chosen because they are the main cultured species with economic importance, accounting for more than 9% of the crustacean market [32]. Brown shrimp was included based on its natural habitat in the environment with its socioeconomic importance for the fishery economy in the North Sea [33]. For arthropods, the American house dust mite was selected since this kind of mite is a widely distributed species that provides the major source of house dust mite tropomyosin allergen [34]; American and German cockroaches were used since they are ubiquitous, difficult to control, predominant, and often correlated with allergy and asthma [35].…”
