Core turbulent particle transport with multiple isotopes can display observable differences in behaviour between the electron and ion particle channels. Experimental observations at JET with mixed H-D plasmas and varying NBI and gas-puff sources [M. Maslov et al., Nucl. Fusion 7 076022 (2018)] inferred source dominated electron peaking, but transport dominated isotope peaking. In this work, we apply the QuaLiKiz quasilinear gyrokinetic transport model within JINTRAC flux-driven integrated modelling, for core transport validation in this multiple-isotope regime. The experiments are successfully reproduced, predicting self consistently j, ne, n Be , Te, T i , ωtor and the isotope composition. As seen in the experiments, both H and D profiles are predicted to be peaked regardless of the core isotope source. An extensive sensitivity study confirmed that this result does not depend on the specific choices made for the boundary conditions and physics settings. While kinetic profiles and electron density peaking did vary depending on the simulation parameters, the isotope ratio remained nearly invariant, and tied to the electron density profile. These findings have positive ramifications for multiple-isotope fuelling, burn control, and helium ash removal.

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are widely used anthropogenic chemicals. The PFAS class includes almost 5000 registered compounds, but analytical methods are lacking for most PFASs. The total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay was developed to indirectly quantify unknown PFASs that are precursors to commonly measured perfluoroalkyl acids. To understand the behavior of recently identified per-and polyfluoroalkyl ether acids (PFEAs), including fluorinated replacements and manufacturing byproducts, we determined the fate of 15 PFEAs in the TOP assay. Ten perfluoroalkyl ether acids and a chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether acid (F-53B) were stable in the TOP assay and represent terminal products that are likely as persistent as historically used PFASs. Adding perfluoroalkyl ether acids and F-53B to the target analyte list for the TOP assay is recommended to capture a higher percentage of the total PFAS concentration in environmental samples. In contrast, polyfluoroalkyl ether acids with a -O-CFH-moiety were oxidized, typically to products that could not be identified by liquid chromatography and highresolution mass spectrometry. Application of the TOP assay in its proposed enhanced form revealed high levels of PFEAs, the presence of precursors that form perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids, and the absence of precursors that form PFEAs in surface water impacted by PFAScontaining wastewater discharges.

A striking feature of social relations in a northwestern Turkish community occurs in the sphere of moral or religious life. While there are many accounts of religious life in the context of official Islamic doctrine, a wide range of less official beliefs and activities are practised along with formai Islam in the community of Sakli. Magic or büyü designates a range of activities with aims and purposes which do not emanate from the authority of orthodoxy. The value and meaning of büyü is located in attempts to subvert or alter situations that are the product offate, or the actions of more powerful actors. In this context this article illustrates how local villagers take their projects to a hoca (lit. religious teacher) who attempts to shape fate more to their liking, for a fee. In their practice of assisting resistance to what is ’written’ in codes or decided by the powerful, hoca often borrow Qur’anic prayers to support their clients’ projects. Written prayers are used as objects that can effect goals, such as protecting villagers from misfortunes, finding ’appropriate’ mates, casting love spells, and occasionally causing harm. I argue that büyü challenges the collusion between official Islamic authority and mainstream local morality.
