Abstract: Partial liquid ventilation with perfluorocarbon could be a good noninvasive alternative technique that improves gas exchange and pulmonary mechanics in meconium aspiration syndrome without impairing cardiovascular function.

“…These PFC species have been previously used in several animal experiments. (15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20) Nebulizer and inhalation catheters A pneumatic nebulizer (LABneb*CCS, Trudell Medical International, London, ON, Canada) connected to three different intratracheal inhalation catheters (AeroProbe Inc., Trudell Medical International) was used to produce the aerosols. (9) These inhalation catheters (IC) consist of several outer lumens, through which a driving gas passes at a high velocity, and a central lumen for the fluid that is to be aerosolized.…”

“…The newborn ovine acute MAS model used in the present study is similar to a number of ovine (13,27) and other animal (14,16,17,21) models. Furthermore, this model is very reproducible and well representative of MAS in human newborns with all its complications (1).…”

“…These PFC species have previously been used in several in vivo and in vitro experiments. (2,4,(8)(9)(10)30) Inhalation catheters and catheter control unit A pneumatic catheter control unit (LABneb*CCS, Trudell Medical International, London, ON, Canada) operated at 6.9 bar connected to three different intratracheal ICs (AeroProbe INC, Trudell Medical International, London, ON, Canada) was used to produce the aerosols. Briefly, these ICs consist of several outer lumens, through which a driving gas passes at a high velocity, and a central lumen for the fluid that is to be aerosolized.…”

“…L ow surface tension of surfactant and perfluorocarbon (PFC) when delivered to the lung reduces the air-liquid interface at the level of the alveolar membrane, improving lung function in various lung diseases, (1)(2)(3)(4) including neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). (5,6) For instance, intratracheal instillation of exogenous natural surfactant is a standard treatment for preterm neonates with RDS, (7) whereas, in the experimental field, partial liquid ventilation (PLV) with PFCs has been proven effective in the treatment of various lung diseases in a wide range of animal models, (2,4,(8)(9)(10) reaching human clinical trials.…”
