The cellular and molecular mechanisms of vertebrate lens development

Abstract: The ocular lens is a model system for understanding important aspects of embryonic development, such as cell specification and the spatiotemporally controlled formation of a three-dimensional structure. The lens, which is characterized by transparency, refraction and elasticity, is composed of a bulk mass of fiber cells attached to a sheet of lens epithelium. Although lens induction has been studied for over 100 years, recent findings have revealed a myriad of extracellular signaling pathways and gene regulato… Show more

“…12). The lens, cornea and iris are lineage-specific novelties in cephalopods, but interestingly, Pax6 and Six3 are required for lens induction in vertebrates (Ogino et al, 2012;Cvekl and Ashery-Padan, 2014). Currently, little is known about any lens-specific function of eyeless and twin of eyeless (Pax6 orthologs) in Drosophila, but imaginal disc cells expressing eyeless and twin of eyeless that give rise to the retina also generate the lens (Charlton-Perkins et al, 2011a).…”

“…Mammalian lens development is an advantageous system with which to study the molecular mechanisms of cellular differentiation, including the regulation of cell cycle exit, chromatin dynamics and elimination of subcellular organelles (Bassnett, 2009;Cvekl and Ashery-Padan, 2014). The lens is composed of a layer of epithelial cells that overlie a bulk of differentiated fiber cells.…”

“…PAX6 se encuentra ubicado en el cromosoma 11p13 54,55 y se expresa ampliamente en la vesícula óptica, el cristalino, la retina y la córnea durante el desarrollo ocular [56][57][58] . Típicamente, las mutaciones de PAX6 originan aniridia bilateral 59,60 , aunque ciertas mutaciones también se han asociado con un espectro más amplio de defectos oculares y cerebrales 60 .…”
