The challenge for botanic garden science

Abstract: Societal Impact Statement Plants are fundamental to solving many of humanity's most important challenges: food insecurity, water scarcity, energy, health, and climate change. With more than 20% of the world's plant species currently threatened with extinction, the loss of plant diversity will result in reduced options for human innovation, adaptation, and resilience. The world's botanic gardens already conserve and manage around a third of all known plant species in their living collections as well as seed ban… Show more

“…In order to receive the benefits that trees provide, we need people who have the skills required to care for trees. Horticulture experts and plant scientists are of vital importance to the world, and they need to be future‐focused in their work, actively seeking positive outcomes for society's challenges (Blackmore & Paterson, ; Raven, ; Smith, ). This new era of the Anthropocene requires a new era of horticulture.…”

“…The Legon botanical garden can be said to fit perfectly into these characteristics making it one of the attractive destinations to people in the country. Smith (2019) points out that a garden containing scientifically ordered and maintained collections of plants, usually documented and labelled, and open to the public for the purposes of recreation, education and research (Ankoma, 2014;5) is a Botanical garden. In the context of the BGCI, the use of the term 'botanical gardens' should be interpreted to include arboretum and other specialized forms of plant collection.…”

“…This perspective is excellent, but specific implementation is still lacking. Another model to be examined might be the successful Botanical Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) based at Kew, U.K., which has already had positive global influence (Smith, 2019). Our conclusion must be that many world organizations dealing with conservation and biodiversity already exist, but our need is to organize our own international community of systematic biologists so that we can interface directly with all the other initiatives and organizations.…”
