The changing context of walking behavior: coping with the COVID-19 Pandemic in urban neighborhoods

Abstract: PurposeIt is observed that the COVID-19 Pandemic mostly restricts people's movement and walking habits. In this direction, this study aims to highlight how the walking behaviors of individuals affected in different geographies' neighborhoods before and during the Pandemic.Design/methodology/approachThis paper focuses on the relationship between neighborhood characteristics and the changing walking behavior of 24 sample regions (514 participants) with the highest incidents of COVID-19 infection from American, E… Show more

“…Por outro lado, viagens realizadas durante a pandemia apresentam um desvio padrão mais baixo, assim, interpreta-se que existe uma tendência maior de homogeneidade em torno do tempo médio de viagem encontrado (Tabela 1). Este resultado reforça o entendimento do acesso a destinos diários caminháveis e "amenidades" urbanas, dentro de 15 a 20 minutos, tornam-se mais importante do que nunca [19].…”

“…The issues that underly the field of walkability this year include some problems in the built environment and an increase in population and urbanization (e.g., Anabtawi and Scoppa, 2022;Qazimirsaeed et al, 2022); car dependencies, transportation and pedestrian infrastructure (Ning et al, 2022;Guzman et al, 2022;Wood, 2022); and traffic congestion (Kunaratnam et al, 2022), noise (Guzman et al, 2022). In the environment, the problem in walkability studies is caused by air pollution (Kunaratnam et al, 2022), emission (Guzman et al, 2022), climate crisis (Lotfata et al, 2022), fossil fuel consumption and air quality (Anabtawi and Scoppa, 2022). In the health aspect, the problems include mental health (Kunaratnam et al, 2022), cognitive function, obesity and chronic disease (Sylvers et al, 2022;Tobin et al, 2022) (See Table 5), with highly discussed topic including "street", and "transport" (See Figure 10).…”

“…Most walkability studies apply an analysis of a physical-based approach to the measurement type (See Figure 7 and Table 4). With respect to the data collection method, the largest portion of research in walkability studies applies subjective methods to measure walkability by employing questionnaires which are then analyzed with statistical analysis using Stata, SPSS (e.g., Yu, 2021; Lotfata et al. , 2022), followed by map-based approach (e.g., OpenStreetMap (OSM)) that then is analyzed by applying spatial/mapping/modeling methods such as space syntax (Yuan et al.…”

“…He focuses on the public spaces as an urban social cohesion and interaction point. Creating socially attractive places like waterfronts and seaside promenades helps increase individuals' sociability and provides a healthy mix of residential, commercial and entertainment components (Lotfata et al ., 2022). The PPS team is one of the institutions that have worked intensively since 1975 on spatial quality and placemaking.…”
