The clinical significance of interleukin 18 assessment in sarcoidosis patients

Abstract: IL-18 may play a significant role in the prolongation of sarcoidosis course. Its estimation may become a good prognostic factor, which should be analyzed together with other factors useful in sarcoidosis monitoring.

“…Interleukin (IL)-18, also called interferon (IFN)-cinducing factor, is an obligatory cytokine for IFN-c production [4] and plays a key role in the induction of Th1 responses [5]. Pro-IL-18 is a biologically inactive precursor that is produced during the acute immune response by monocytes, macrophages, and immature dendritic cells.…”

“…It is a very strong IFN-γ inducing factor. IL-18 level was the highest in plasma of patients with disease progression, in patients with lung interstitial changes and patients with extrapulmonary manifestation of the disease (Kieszko et al, 2007). Chitotriosidase, an enzyme secreted by activated macrophages and involved in defense against chitin-containing pathogens, was shown to correlate with the extent of lung changes, as assessed by radiological staging (Grosso et al, 2004).…”

“…These cells release several chemokines and cytokines that lead to cellular proliferation. The cytokine profile of active BBS is characterized by T helper 1 (Th1) prevalence (Kieszko et al 2007). The main cytokine involved in the polarization of T-cell response is IL-18, an interferon gamma inducing factor (Kieszko et al 2007).…”

Remodeling of lung tissues during the process of granuloma formation requires restructuring of the extracellular matrix and cathepsins K, L, and S are among the strongest extracellular matrix degrading enzymes (Samokhin et al 2011).…”
