The clinical transition between pemphigus foliaceus and pemphigus vulgaris correlates well with the changes in autoantibody profile assessed by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay

Abstract: The clinical phenotype at each stage is defined by the anti-Dsg antibody profile in the serum of these pemphigus patients showing mixed features of PF and PV. In addition, ELISA using recombinant baculoproteins was particularly useful in distinguishing PF and PV.

“…In contrast, there are only 3 reported cases of transition from PF to PV [1, 6, 7] and 3 cases of PV-PF overlap [4, 6]. The period of transition from PV to PF ranged from 6 months to 20 years with a median of 3 years.…”

“…A few cases have been reported in the literature. Earlier cases were confirmed by histology and immunoblotting [1,2,3,4,5,6] while the transition in more recent cases has been demonstrated by a change in desmoglein (Dsg) 1 and 3 autoantibody profile by Dsg ELISA testing [6,7,8,9,10,11]. We report 3 cases that showed transition from PV to PF confirmed by Dsg ELISA.…”

“…[19][20][21][22] Curiously, recent reports describe the rare transition of phenotype from PV to PF [23][24][25][26][27] and from PF to PV. 26,28,29 In addition, anti-Dsg1 autoantibodies, typical of PF, have been detected in serum samples from patients with PV. 2 Conversely, anti-Dsg3 autoantibodies have been detected in serum samples from patients with PF and FS.…”
